RSSpeaker : iPhone Application

RSSpeaker : iPhone Application

Altum Design Studios launched a new app RSSpeaker which combines the technology of custom RSS feeds and using the software from Acapela translates text to speech. This results in your iPhone or iPod touch into a personal news anchor. The RSSpeaker’s interface is very simple. You have a list and you just need to tab the plus button to add feeds. Adding feeds from the New York Times, CNN, and The Daily Beast were easy but SFGate and The Washington Post were unverifiable.

When you save the feeds all you have to do is press play to convert it to speech from text. The RSSpeaker picks only the head lines and short blurbs that can be found on the sites homepage. You can read faster that one paragraph description than listen to it. This app can be made to use while you are driving or your eyes are engaged somewhere. But then you don’t get the full stories on RSSpeaker which is a major flaw. Then the pleasant female voice sounds bit robotic even if you can speed up her so that she matches the cadence of a regular person. She may sometime sound like a monotone NPR broadcaster reading hard news.

Grocery Pal : iPhone Application

Grocery pal helps you learn more about in store specials and promotion while you make the list. After downloading the app you need to enter your zip code and then the Grocery Pal will provide you with a list of local super markets. After adding few stores you can browse their promotions by categories. You can build your list based on what’s on sale. Browsing through discounted food is easy and you can see the details of the food too and add those to your shopping list.
Grocery Pal doesn’t work well when you assemble your shopping list from scratch. Once you select one item and after saving if you go for promotions available for that item, you have to again go to the grocery list and tap on the price comparison by stores tab. But then you will get all the pricing information for foods that are presently on sale in your grocery circulars.

Sometimes the Grocery Pal doesn’t find foods that are available at your area stores at a discounted price. This caused due to poor labeling which isn’t entirely apps problem. The Grocery Pal searches only on the title field.

PhotoSpeak : iPhone Application

PhotoSpeak from MotionPotrait takes a still photo and adds your voice and some animation which looks like as the photo is speaking. PhotoSpeak is a simple app where you just need select a photo with a face and crop it such that it fits. The best photo would be a straight tight shot with your eyes open and mouth closed. After selecting the photo you can upload the photo to the MotionPotrait’s servers. In next minute the photo would return to its animated form. Then you would see that the eyes blink and the head turns from one side to other.

You have choice to record a number of your own audio tracks which can be then added to the animated images. Then when you combine the audio and animated photo your image seems to come to life. The latest version of PhotoSpeak enables you to upload the final edited photo to you tube and then you can email notices to whoever you want to. But the quality of the product gets deteriorated a bit. The PhotoSpeak also has an added feature where you can add a hairdo and sunglasses to the image. Thus the PhotoSpeak is very simple and fun concept.
