Bounce Lite

Bounce LiteLooking for an iPhone or iPod Touch App that gives you repetitious play and fun-filled storyline? Longing for some adventure game Apps to be released? Then Bounce Lite is the App for you! Created by Team Phobic LLC, Bounce Lite is the free version of their paid App, Bounce, and is targeted at capturing the audience of adventure gamers everywhere.

There are several great features about this App, and we definitely like how they’ve been incorporated together by the developer to create one great App. The storyline focuses on a ball that fell out of the pocket of its owner, and now it’s looking for a way back home. You play through multiple levels by rolling, bouncing, or battling along to reach your destination. The game makes full use of the iPhone and iPod Touch’s capabilities by allowing you to move your ball by tilting your device side to side. You jump by tapping the screen, and the height is determined by the length of the tap. The game also lets multiple players play on the same device through the use of profiles, something previously unseen in iPhone and iPod Touch Apps. If there’s one thing we didn’t like, it was how short the game was, because we were completely addicted to the story line after the first few levels!

In conclusion, we found this App very addictive, and also very interesting. We liked how it expanded the capabilites of the iPhone and iPod Touch, and tried to innovate past most other game ups. We’ve surprisingly been doing this a lot lately, but that’s no reason for denying an App that deserves it the right to recieve it. Therefore, we award this App a fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

Tower Bloxx Deluxe 3D Free

Tower Bloxx Deluxe 3D FreeThe biggest market of all iPhone and iPod Touch Apps is games, and it’s also the most competitive. Thanks to this competitiveness, the market also demands extreme innovation in the form of new types of games for any new App to stay alive. One App that is trying to satisfy that need is Tower Bloxx Deluxe 3D. While the name is long, make no mistake, this App is a heavyweight in the industry. After all, it was made by Digital Chocolate, a leading game developer, in and outside the iPhone and iPod Touch. The free version of this App is called Tower Bloxx Deluxe 3D Free.

This game brings the simplicity of those classic games and combines it with the advanced story line of a complex 21st century game. The game is kind of like Tetris, but this time you want to file your blocks to the top. All you do is choose a city to build in, then start from the bottom on. The pieces of the houses are swinging in the wind, so you have to time them just right so the tower won’t topple over. Get it perfectly in the center and the game rewards you with bonus points. What we like about this App is the above. The fact that it provides simple gameplay, with the repetitive playing ability that many other games lack. We also like to think that Digital Chocolate took our advice, because this game has much more free content than previous games from them.

Whether you like games like this aside, there is no arguing the fact that this game is going to become a top-seller for Digital Chocolate. They’ve put their minds together and created a great App that is bound to capture audiences. With no bad things to say about this App yet, we give it a stunning 5 out of 5 stars.

myHomeworkKeeping track of all your assignments from all your classes while continuing to keep up with the busy high school lifestyle isn’t a small task. In fact, it’s almost like a full time job all in itself. Recognizing the need for a personal organizer on the iPhone and iPod Touch, Rodrigo Neri created an App for a very significant amount of users of these devices: School Kids and University Students. That App has now been released for free, and goes by the name of myHomework.

The App works just like many other personal organizers do: By collecting your homework information, sorting it out, and then reminding you when it needs to be finished. We liked the features that the developer went on to add in this App however, because it really shows they went above the bare minimums for a free App. One example is how you can easily set up classes and information about them, such as the schedule, the building name (for university students), the room number, the name of the professor, the amount of days you have the class, and a course number if you have one. Another appluadable part of this App is the outstanding graphical interface. While many Apps we see these days are just black and white screens thrown together, the developer did a great job in creating a great looking graphical experience for the users. The final, and perhaps coolest, feature for us was the Apple-style red update icon that pops on your home screen to warn you of impending due dates.

myHomeworkmyHomework

Overall, we think the developer did an excellent job. We really think Mr. Neri put his heart into this one, and the quality of the work definitely shows in this App. Due to that, we award this App an uncommon 5 out of 5 stars.

Vault Breaker FREEEver wanted to figure out when you’re going to die, and exactly how much time you have left? Joseph Kump, the maker of the free Apple App iDie sure thinks so, because his does exactly that! The App, released only for free, has a very catchy tag line as well, which is “Get it Now, before you’re dead”!

As soon as you open the App after the download and install, you’ll notice that there is a lot missing however. All the current App does is let you choose the day you were born, and then choose whether you’re a guy or a girl. It then uses the average life expectancy to calculate exactly how old you’re going to live to be, and then does the math and gives it out to you in terms of days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The idea behind the App is to be able to whip this out and tell someone exactly how long you’ve got to live, and how much time they’ve wasted. The idea is a bit flawed, however, as there are a number of factors that come into account when figuring out a person’s life expectancy. A few factors that come to mind include their personal habits (smoking, drinking, etc.), their nationality and ethnicity, their diet, etc. While the App can’t possibly incorporate all of these factors, we feel that a few more would have made the App much more fun and realistic. We also think that fixing a couple of annoying errors and typos would have made it more professional.

Let’s hope the developers of this App get it right next time, because this idea is almost guarenteed to be a sure-fire hit, and if the developer can fix up his act, this App will be exactly that. Until then, we’re going to have to give this App a promising 2 out of 5 stars.

Banner FreeEver wanted to turn you iPhone or iPod Touch into an advertising board, whether just for fun, or to genuinely advertise something? Banner, and its companion software, Banner Free, want to help you do just that! Released by Akamatsu, this great free App is now ending up on many people’s iPhone and iPod Touch’s, so we thought it was high time we review it.

This App is very basic, but very trivial at the same time. The App functions by displaying whatever you want it to say in LCD-like lights. The free version of the App is basically nothing more than that, and that’s where we find it’s shortfalls are. While the App performs the pretty cool feature of displaying your text in virtual lights, we feel like it could have been much better if all the features of the paid version was migrated into it, and the paid version discontinued all together. We understand that an App Developer has to put food on the table somehow, but we can hardly believe that the creator of this App makes a lot of money off this App anyways. Some examples of the features we would like to see on this App include the addition of multi-coloured lights and backgrounds, the addition of different fonts, control over speed of the scrolling text, vertical scrolling alongside horizontal scrolling, and the ability to add different styles of scrolling (backwards, back-and-forth,etc.).

So while App has a pretty neat idea, and is fun App to keep on your iPhone or iPod Touch even after you’re done using it, we believe that the developer did a very poor job with the release and features in this App. Even though Apps are getting smaller and more useless by the day, we don’t think that’s a valid reason to make no-feature apps. That said, we award this App an unflattering 1 out of 5 stars.

Vault Breaker FREECryptic codes and deciphering them is a very interesting topic right now, with people of all ages and backgrounds wanting to take a stab and test their skills at the remarkable talent. With that notion in mind, a new App called Vault Breaker FREE was created. The full version game App, created by independent developer Alexandru Brie, is available completely free for a limited time.

One thing this game should of came with that is severely required to play it is it’s instruction guide and manual. I highly recommend you read it before you begin playing, because you’ll otherwise get lost. The game revolves around a safe that you are trying to crack. There is no limit on the number of tries you can take in cracking the safe, but the game tracks your attempts so you can compete against yourself. The concept of the game is pretty simple, in that all you do is enter digits, and the game will tell you if they’re correct, and also if they’re in the right position or not. There are currently 4 modes in the game, and range from Easy (3 digits passwords) to Expert (6 Digits). Though the game may seem easy, it requires some thought beforehand, and once you’ve got it down, it’s more like clockwork. One thing about the game is that it asks to use your current location, even though there is clearly no need for the information. We think this is because they want to display local advertising, but we must say that we frown upon the concept.

While this game will provide a delightful experience for any wanna-be crptybreakers, it’s definitely not for everyone. We also think the interface could have been better designed, as it looks extremely amateurish at the moment. With that factored, we award this App a enriching 3 out of 5 stars.

BubbleWrap

BubbleWrapEver received a package or courier as a child, and then experienced the delight to know that it was covered with Bubble Wrap? I know I did, and the fun of popping each individual bubble is something I cherish to this day. Grown up? No problem! BubbleWrap, one of the most popular free Apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch, is there to let young’uns and grown-ups alike relive those memories. This App is the brainchild of Peter Watling, the independent developer.

This game is one the most simplest, yet most creative ideas for an App I’ve come across. It takes the very simple concept of bubble wrap, throws in the functionality of the iPhone and iPod Touch, and out comes a dashing game concept. The game works like this: As soon as you open up te App, the game starts. You have 45 seconds to pop as many of the bubbles as you can. The ones that you do pop will come back in a short amount of time (quicker than you can pop the remainder for sure). This way, you can continue popping until the time runs out, and it adds an element of strategy to the game (should you pop in an organized manner or just all out?). There are also various “5x” bubbles hidden around that give 5 times the points. While this game does have many merits, such as the included local high score table, we would have preferred more online gameplay, such as wi-fi head-to-head action, and an online high score table.

BubbleWrapBubbleWrap

If you’re looking for a game that you can play over and over and not get bored, this is definitely for you. If you’re looking for an App that pushes the limits of Apple Wi-Fi, however, you should move on. We like the app nonetheless, and therefore we award it with a stellar 4 out 5 stars.

Arcade Bowling Lite

posted by iPodFirst in Games

Arcade Bowling LiteHold on to your socks, folks, because the classic carnival game of Arcade Bowling is now available on your iPhone and iPod Touch through a great App called Arcade Bowling Lite! Created by game developers Skyworks Inc., this App is the free version of Arcade Bowling, and provides for a new type of experience of any iPhone and iPod Touch gamer.

This game takes the concept of the bowling App, which was really popular when the iPhone and iPod Touch first came out, and moves it into another league altogether. The point in the game is to accumulate a higher number of points than the top person on the high-score table, which is your only competition. You do so by rolling the ball so it lands in the hole with the most points marked. Be aware, though, that the higher the value of the hole, the harder it is to get it in there. While the concept of the game is fairly new and interesting, we feel it would have been more fun with a high-score table. Even though the highest anyone could theorectically get would be 1000, we think this can be overcome with a version where the player continues to play until missing the 100. We also think a head-to-head mode of the game would also be very exciting and fun. Another sizable problem in the game is how the ball curves, and a manual on the topic would be appreciated.

Arcade Bowling LiteArcade Bowling Lite

This App is certainly a keeper in the world of iPhone and iPod Touch games, but without some improvement in gameplay, it will dimish in the competitive world quickly. That’s why even though we found the game interesting and slightly addictive, we only award this app with a weary 4 out of 5 stars.

Pole Position Remix Lite

posted by iPodFirst in Games

Namco, the company that in the 80’s brought you some of the greatest classics ever made, plans to do exactly the same thing with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Capitalizing on their already massive audience and popular games, they’re converting more of their classics to Apple Apps. The newest one to be released is Pole Position Remix, which is a remake of their classic Pole Position game. The free version of this paid App is called Pole Position Remix Lite.

The first thing you’ll notice when opening the App is that you can only play the qualifying lap of the actual game on the free version. Fair enough, we thought, as long as the qualifying lap provides enough content. The game features Formula 1 cars, one of which is yours. You start behind everyone else, and unlike other games with 2 pedals, you only have 1: the brake. That means if you want to accelerate you must let the game do it, and then you have to use your brake to slow down. Believe us when we say you’re definitely going to have to use your brake to win. This slightly outdated concept in today’s world is a bit different, and definitely took us some time to get used to. The innovation in this game, however, really shines in it’s use of the Apple Accelerometer to steer the racecar.

Pole Position Remix Lite

Pole Position Remix Lite

While this App provides some excitement and a refreshing gameplay experience, we find that it’s severely limited 1 lap trial version really drags down it’s lustre. Namco, however, has been known for such behavior, and even so, that’s no excuse. Beyond that, the game’s graphics and gameplay options were miniscule compared to modern games. Those reasons are why we’re giving this App a relatively unimpressive 3 out of 5 stars.

Newton’s Cradle

posted by iPodFirst in Games

It seems that developer’s everywhere are now rushing to transform everything and anything they possibly find into an App for the iPhone and iPod Touch. One of these developers, Grant Hull, has done exactly that for another very popular ornament, Newton’s Cradle. The cradle, which has risen to become one of the most intriguing and popular scientific toys in history, is now transformed into an App, which is very appropriately called Newton’s Cradle.

I’m certain that anyone and everyone who is reading this post knows what Newton’s Cradle is, but just to refresh your memory, I’ll provide a brief description. Newton’s Cradle is a small ornament that contains 5 pendulums. It demonstrates the laws of physics, because when you swing one or more pendulums on one end, the force is transferred to the other end as well, and this creates a “cradling” effect. This App has just taken that concept, and moved into the iPhone and iPod Touch. Not only does it make use of Apple’s touch-screen technology to control the pendulums, but it also allows the use of the accelerometer to swing the cradle and add extra force.

Newton's Cradle

This App is a very honest barrel of laughs for anyone who is even slightly interested in Science and Physics. While we wouldn’t call it the blockbuster success of the year, there is no doubt that this App is an occasional time passer for some people, and a god send for others who are bored at their desk. In light of it’s limited uses, however, we must award this App a satisfactory 3 out of 5 stars.
